Sick little Gage

Gage has had a rough start to life. Gage would cry and scream in pain for HOURS a day. There were a few weeks were Gage would cry for 15 hours out of the day. Gage had no periods of calmness or being content. Even after eating Gage displayed signs of being in severe pain as he screamed, shook, and alternated arching his back and being stiff as board. It has been very emotional for me, my mom, and Rob. It breaks your heart to watch your little guy in such pain and nothing you do appears to ease the pain or bring any relief to him. Gage has had several trips to the pediatrician to help with the intense level of spit up, as he was not gaining weight. Gage’s endless crying and pain also initiated a few more visits to the pediatrician, which lead to an ultrasound. During the ultrasound it was decided that Gage had borderline pyloric stenosis. The doctor urged us to take Gage immediately to the emergency room at Children’s Hospital. The emergency room and hospital stay was HORRIBLE. Three different nurses tried to put the IV in Gage’s arm but he was so dehydrated the veins kept collapsing. They eventually called one of the Flight for Life guys who thankfully was able to finally get the IV hooked up. We were in the hospital 30 hours with Gage. Gage had to have an empty stomach for the surgery so he couldn’t eat. It was one of the worst things I have gone through this far, to watch him crying and hurting and not being able to eat. The surgical doctor ran a few more tests and decided not to put Gage through the surgery. Gage was put on new meds and after a week he was like a new baby. We are finally getting to see him happy, smiling, and cooing.

Gage still has days with severe spit-up, we go through about two bibs, one burp cloth and sometimes one outfit at every feeding. Mom (Nonna) and Grandma Hirschi made Gage some triple strength burp cloths that are adorable. They are like mini towels! Gage has to see a Gastro-Intestinal doctor every two months to regulate and monitor his medicine. Rob was able to give Gage a blessing with a friend from our ward before we admitted Gage into the emergency room. I am continually grateful that Rob keeps himself worthy to bless our family when we need it.
